The Do It Yourself sector is one of the most dynamic of the whole retail trade. Between 1996 and 2006, the turnover has been increased twofold.

According to a survey of the INSEE, this growth has been helpful mostly for the big retailers such as Castorama or Leroy Merlin. Small hardware stores have difficulties to fight those giants which are adoptive massive marketing.

In 2006, the retail trade sector of DIY regroup about 7500 societies for 89000 employees, mostly big retailers and hardware stores. But even if the turnover is very important, the margin of this sector is pretty low, about 30% of gross margin.
 This networks and holdings, such as Kingfisher or Leroy Merlin which are representing the most part of the market shares. There are only 6 retailers, Weldom, Bricorama, Leroy Merlin, Castorama + Brico Dépôt, Mr Bricomarche and Mr Bricolage which represent 92% of the market.

In France, the Leader of Do It Yourself is the group Kingfisher represented by Castorama and Brico Dépôt with a cumulated turnover of 6.2 billions euros. Leroy Merlin and Bricoman are the second with about 5.8 billions.
